Once you've had a chance to go through the information shared with you about surgery, and you've decided that you'd like to proceed with surgery, we will arrange a surgical appointment for you.
If you wear contact lenses, then you'll have to stop using them 2 days before surgery.
You should avoid wearing any makeup or strong perfume on the day of surgery
If you think that you'd like some medication to relax yourself during surgery, we can arrange this with one of our doctors beforehand.

On the day of surgery, you'll have to come to hospital an hour beforehand, to allow for repeat testing if indicated and signing of consent forms.
We'll then walk you through the procedure verbally beforehand so that you know what to expect at each stage.
We'll then prepare you for surgery, by asking you to wear a surgical gown and cap over your clothing. We'll also put some numbing drops into your eyes.

You'll then be taken into the laser suite and asked to lie down on a surgical bed that will move under the laser.

We'll give you feedback about what's happening every step of the way.

Once surgery starts, it typically takes between 10-15 minutes to complete the process depending on the type of laser procedure you've chosen.

Once surgery is complete, you'll be taken to a recovery room, where you'll be given the opportunity to rest.

After some time, you'll be taken to a consultation room, where your eyes will be examined to ensure that your eyes are in good condition before being allowed to go home.

We'll go over postoperative instructions and how to use your medication.

Before going, you'll be given a pouch containing medication and some protective eyewear.

You'll also have an emergency contact number to call in the event that any issues arise after surgery.

PRK Aftercare

Bandage contact lenses

After surgery, you'll have contact lenses placed in your eyes. These are zero powered lenses that protect the ocular surface, encouraging healing of your eyes and to decrease pain. They'll be removed in clinic during your postoperative visit at 1 week.

Vision after surgery

You can expect blurry vision (somewhat like having vaseline smeared over a pair of glasses) for around a week after surgery. The vision may initially be clear, after which, as healing of the surface progresses, this may become blurry and then clear up again. Most people have vision good enough to work with at 1 week.

It's also common to be light sensitive and see starbursts around lights for the first month.

Stinging and burning after surgery

There will be stinging and watering of your eyes for 3-4 days after surgery. It'll feel somewhat like there's something rubbing in your eyes, or like there's onion fumes in them. As the healing of your eyes progresses, this will go down. It's important not to rub them, as these can damage them.

Pain medication will be given to you to help you cope with this.

Activities after surgery

You should avoid driving for the first week.
It's best to go to sleep after you get home from surgery, as this will allow the surface to heal.
